The Story Behind the Steps

"Nobody cares if you can't dance well. Just get up and dance. Great dancers are not great because of their technique, but because of their passion."

— Martha Graham

What Is Line Dancing?

Imagine a room full of people, all facing the same direction, moving in perfect unison to music that makes your soul tap its foot. No partner required. No experience necessary. Just you, the beat, and a sequence of steps that somehow turns a crowd of strangers into a synchronized, grinning, slightly sweaty family.

That's line dancing.

Born from the country-western dance halls of America, line dancing has since kicked its boots off and gone global. You'll find it set to pop, Latin, Irish, R&B, swing — if it has a rhythm, someone has choreographed a line dance to it. Each dance is a set pattern of steps that repeats, often with turns (called "walls") that keep things interesting. A 4-wall dance means you'll face every corner of the room before you're done. A 1-wall dance means you can stare lovingly at the mirror the whole time. We don't judge.

Why Line Dancing?

No Partner Needed

Your dance partner is the music. And the music never steps on your toes.

The Jargon Buster

New to the lingo? Here's your cheat sheet.

Grapevine — A side-together-side-touch pattern. The bread and butter of line dancing. You'll do approximately ten thousand of these in your first class.

Wall — The direction you face. A 4-wall dance rotates you 90° each time through the sequence; a 2-wall dance turns you 180°. A 1-wall dance? You've got it easy.

Count — The number of beats (steps) in one full sequence. A 32-count dance repeats every 32 beats. A 64-count dance means more to remember — and more to brag about.

Tag / Restart — Surprise! The choreographer threw in extra steps or restarted the sequence mid-way. Keeps you on your toes — literally.

Copperknob — The world's largest online database of line dance step sheets. Think of it as the encyclopedia of footwork. You'll find links to it throughout this site.
